Telemetry

Glen has now been fitted with a track pack for his new transmitter. He didn't make too much fuss and I was able to fit it whilst he was un-hooded.

As it is the first time he has had a track pack mount I'll have to see if he makes a fuss or not, and bites it off (hopefully not as the track pack mount cost a fair amount!)

Here's a picture (after fitting it tonight) of the transmitter clipped on the track pack, you can't see the pack as he's preened it under his feathers.

Weasel time

Glen has now had his first catch of the season.

A weasel!
unfortunately Glen sustained four bites! And he wasn't happy about it!
I will update how the bites recover.

Here's a pic I got of the weasel when we got home, and for a small creature it's sure got sharp teeth!

Its quite odd that I was out with my mentor flying 2 of his Harris hawks a few days ago when his female (Lady the Harris hawk) caught herself a weasel.

Could it just be a coincidence or did Lady tell Glen how to catch one?

Free flying

Well with weather conditions and Glen keeping his fat weight it has taken a little longer to get him free, but today he has flown free!

Now its time for some good fitness sessions to get his stamina and agility back!

Start all over again- moult update 12

Glen has had his time off, and now it's time to start flying again. He was 1lb14.9 oz on Tuesday evening, and his highest flying weight before was around 1lb 9.3oz.

Re-training began Wednesday, and he is doing great, I hope to get him flying free by the end of next week, but it all depends on how well he dose. But it will be a while to get him fit and turn that fat to muscle again.

Warming up - moult update 11

I managed to get a slow motion video of Glen with his wings out, and go through frame by frame, just to count how many feathers he has left to drop.
Is far as I can count he has 4 on each wing and 4 left to drop on his tail.

The warmer weather is comming back, but for how long?

I need at least a good three weeks of good weather to get glen to finish off his last few feathers, after the set back from this colder weather.

A new nest - moult update 10

After the hurricane the weather has been getting colder, and Glen's feather growth has slowed down. :(

So to keep him entertained I've made him a new nest. Built with a old hula hoop, it seems to be a lot more roubust than his last one.

Best of all glen has not destroyed it, but instead has added too and improve it.

Hurricane - moult update 9

With a ex-Hurricane hitting the uk, I have had to lock down Glen's aviary, covering his open roof and open window to keep the 50mph winds out.
Luckily the wind dident cause any damage but Glen wasn't bothered by any of it.

Swinging and dens - moult update 8

With all this warm weather Glen is doing great and his feathers are growing supper quick!

Take a look at him now!

And to give glen something different to do in his house, a new den.
Don't know how long until he destroy it.

Looking scruffy- moult update 7

Glen is starting to look rather scruffy with half adult and half imutuer feathers all over his body.
You can see one of his new tail feathers comming down on the picture below.

Sunbathing - moult update 6

I managed to grap a picture of Glen sunbathing in his house the other day, and you can see his new wing feathers growing down on his left wing.

Cleaning out - moult update 5

Been a while since I last posted.

Glen has been doing good and is still wanting to socialise with me and others, in fact he's getting grumpy if I don't pop in to see him and have a chat, (and poos on me through the window).
Today he has had to come out of his house so I could disinfect it and give it a full clean. He wasn't so happy about being out at first, as the gulls came over, but when they went he was fine.

I now have a good collection of Glen's feathers and he's starting to change in colour with his adult plumage.

I'm going to miss his younger colours.

Nesting - moult update 4

Day 35 of the moult.
I've given Glen some nesting material for him to play with. He wasn't doing much with it so I've started him off with a ring of sticks, but it looks a bit small.
Main thing is it's something new to keep him occupied in his house, but I'm not too sure how long it will take him to build it or destroy it.

Growing fast - moult update 3

Day 33 Of the moult
Glen is doing great!
Good food and good weather is helping loads. Just take a look how big his new tail feather is now.

And I've given Glen some nest building material to keep him busy.
