Telemetry

Glen has now been fitted with a track pack for his new transmitter. He didn't make too much fuss and I was able to fit it whilst he was un-hooded.

As it is the first time he has had a track pack mount I'll have to see if he makes a fuss or not, and bites it off (hopefully not as the track pack mount cost a fair amount!)

Here's a picture (after fitting it tonight) of the transmitter clipped on the track pack, you can't see the pack as he's preened it under his feathers.

Weasel time

Glen has now had his first catch of the season.

A weasel!
unfortunately Glen sustained four bites! And he wasn't happy about it!
I will update how the bites recover.

Here's a pic I got of the weasel when we got home, and for a small creature it's sure got sharp teeth!

Its quite odd that I was out with my mentor flying 2 of his Harris hawks a few days ago when his female (Lady the Harris hawk) caught herself a weasel.

Could it just be a coincidence or did Lady tell Glen how to catch one?

Free flying

Well with weather conditions and Glen keeping his fat weight it has taken a little longer to get him free, but today he has flown free!

Now its time for some good fitness sessions to get his stamina and agility back!

Start all over again- moult update 12

Glen has had his time off, and now it's time to start flying again. He was 1lb14.9 oz on Tuesday evening, and his highest flying weight before was around 1lb 9.3oz.

Re-training began Wednesday, and he is doing great, I hope to get him flying free by the end of next week, but it all depends on how well he dose. But it will be a while to get him fit and turn that fat to muscle again.

Warming up - moult update 11

I managed to get a slow motion video of Glen with his wings out, and go through frame by frame, just to count how many feathers he has left to drop.
Is far as I can count he has 4 on each wing and 4 left to drop on his tail.

The warmer weather is comming back, but for how long?

I need at least a good three weeks of good weather to get glen to finish off his last few feathers, after the set back from this colder weather.

A new nest - moult update 10

After the hurricane the weather has been getting colder, and Glen's feather growth has slowed down. :(

So to keep him entertained I've made him a new nest. Built with a old hula hoop, it seems to be a lot more roubust than his last one.

Best of all glen has not destroyed it, but instead has added too and improve it.

Hurricane - moult update 9

With a ex-Hurricane hitting the uk, I have had to lock down Glen's aviary, covering his open roof and open window to keep the 50mph winds out.
Luckily the wind dident cause any damage but Glen wasn't bothered by any of it.

Swinging and dens - moult update 8

With all this warm weather Glen is doing great and his feathers are growing supper quick!

Take a look at him now!

And to give glen something different to do in his house, a new den.
Don't know how long until he destroy it.

Looking scruffy- moult update 7

Glen is starting to look rather scruffy with half adult and half imutuer feathers all over his body.
You can see one of his new tail feathers comming down on the picture below.

Sunbathing - moult update 6

I managed to grap a picture of Glen sunbathing in his house the other day, and you can see his new wing feathers growing down on his left wing.

Cleaning out - moult update 5

Been a while since I last posted.

Glen has been doing good and is still wanting to socialise with me and others, in fact he's getting grumpy if I don't pop in to see him and have a chat, (and poos on me through the window).
Today he has had to come out of his house so I could disinfect it and give it a full clean. He wasn't so happy about being out at first, as the gulls came over, but when they went he was fine.

I now have a good collection of Glen's feathers and he's starting to change in colour with his adult plumage.

I'm going to miss his younger colours.

Nesting - moult update 4

Day 35 of the moult.
I've given Glen some nesting material for him to play with. He wasn't doing much with it so I've started him off with a ring of sticks, but it looks a bit small.
Main thing is it's something new to keep him occupied in his house, but I'm not too sure how long it will take him to build it or destroy it.

Growing fast - moult update 3

Day 33 Of the moult
Glen is doing great!
Good food and good weather is helping loads. Just take a look how big his new tail feather is now.

And I've given Glen some nest building material to keep him busy.

Can you see it - moult update 2

Day 36 Of the moult

Just snapped a photo of Glen's new tail feather, and it's good to see Glen has officially began growing his new adult feathers.

Day 22
A better picture of the new feather growing, whilst I've got him out of his house.
The small white lump on his older feather is where I fixed it earlier in the season, after him bending it out of place.

Moult progress

Day 13 of Glens moult.

2:15PM in the aviary, Glen has dropped his first feathers,
with all the sunshine and heat over the previous days have kick started his moult.
It should take approximately 5 to 7 days until his next set of flight feathers drop.

Glen has been dining on fine food from chicken and pheasant, to rabbit and quail. Heck he's getting better food than me! A good varied diet for him to eat everyday, should give Glen more nutrition than he needs, to help him grow strong healthy new feathers. Just a shame the last couple of days the weather has been rather miserable, we want the sun and heat back to help those new feathers grow!

A new bath for Glen

I've just had a new bath delivered for Glen today!
His old one was a plastic paddling pool but now he's got a brand new fiberglass one from Crown falconry!

Saturday 10 May 2014

The end, as we know it.

Not to sound too dramatic but today was the last day of flying Glen. He's flown brilliantly, although we didn't catch anything he had plenty of chases into thick cover, and some of the best soaring he has ever done, making today a good day to end with.
The reason for stop flying Glen is so he can rest over summer whilst he goes through his moult.

Flying and training Glen has been such an experience for me, from the fist day of getting him off the breeder and seeing his little face not knowing where he was or who I was, to flying alongside me and looking forward seeing me every morning, and hunting with me and other Harris hawks.

The hard part for me is what to do whilst he is in moult! But he will see me every day passing his house to drop off food late morning and tea time, and doing other jobs around the garden.

I will try and keep you posted how he is progressing through his moult, and when re-training starts.

Crows & Mice

Most of this week Glen has had some fun being by chased crows & chasing them back.

He has been mobbed and dive bombed by rooks, jackdaws, magpies, and carrion crows. But he has not been put off, instead he has given them a taste of there own medicine. He was close to catching one in level flight but needs to learn to keep his height, before putting in a stoop to get them (a dive).

I do admire crows and think they are a very intelligent spices, but as crows are classed as a pest spices, they can be hunted all year round (the same as rabbits).

Glen's also been off and after mice in the woods. He caught 2 in one trip out this week, even if he lost one after another Harris Hawk (flying with us) had a squabble trying to nick it of him.

Soaring high

A great day today, Glen has been out with a friend of his (Jasper). To be honest Glen was being a little naught at first but after getting halfway round and chasing a good 5 mice he found some thermals and was soaring up high looking for some prey.
This is some of the best soaring I've ever seen him do!

I will have find the video of his 1st time on the soar, and then grab a new video the next time he dose it, and post it!

Not much to do

It's been a boring time since we caught the last rabbit with this weather, and Glen's been raring to go.

So today we got back out and had some fun.

Monday 24 March 2014

The 2nd one

We've had a great day again, Glens been out with his mate Jasper (another male Harris Hawk), and me with my mate and mentor.

Glen has chased after another rabbit and led a chase on a pigeon, with Jasper following in close pursuit. Near the end Glen needed feeding some more food so Jasper went a shorter route. Me and Glen headed off to do so some more flying through a field, but, when Glen was coming up to me he suddenly changed course.

He just managed to grab a young rabbit as it was heading down its hole, so he's fed up on that and after sorting out Glen's equipment we went to brag to Jasper, and Glen's other palls (other hawks & falcons).

Glens on a role, but the weather forecast don't look too good again, for the coming week.

Tuesday 11 March 2014

Bunny

Just been out today hunting for rabbits with Glen, and after all the weeks since he got the pheasant, we finally catch again!!!

He's chased a bird, a mouse then he managed to bag him self a Adult Rabbit!
its his 1st rabbit he's caught and it was a magnificent chase!

Wind

Need I say anymore than the title.

The wind and stormy weather we have had over the last few weeks has been horrid, and Me and Glen have not had much luck. The gale-force winds and gusts are just so hard for Glen and would just blow him away!
I just hope it will give up

Here's a pic of him the other day with Lady, his pall (the female Harris Hawk).
