What is Falconry?

Falconry has been around for years, in fact it is believed to have started before 700BC (that's over 2713 years ago), and the basic principle of it has remained the same since.

Falconry is a type of hunting by using a bird of prey that has been trained to work with humans to catch food for us to be put food on the dinner table. The birds are trained like any animal, with food. When they catch something the falconer will reward them for catching it with more food, this is done by swap the prey over for the food reward.

Now, thousands of people still do this all over the world, and some still rely on there birds doing good to get any food on the table. In the UK many people will still hunt with there birds but don't have to rely on the bird catching the food for the Falconers own survival.

Falconry is now used with the public in several ways, with displays at shows by falconers, hawk walks from local falconry centres, pest control in landfills and sports grounds, educational visits to schools and youth groups, and many many more.
